The book I chose to review was the The Scarlet Letter. . It was scripted by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he was fourty-six years old when he wrote the story, and was paternity for twenty-four years . It was published in 1850 by Ticknor, vibrating reed & Fields in Boston. Summarized, it is a story somewhat the trials and tribulations of Hester Prynne. She moves to Boston, sledding her husband behind. Two years after not seeing her husband, she has an affair with reverend Dimmesdale. This leads to her becoming pregnant and being penalize by the town. She is forced to wear an A on her thorax for the rest of her life. While being punished upon the town scaffold, she sees her husband in the crowd. He swears to find the father of Hesters child and seeks his punish upon the unknowing reverend. He does so under the name of Roger Chillingworth to void being recognized. Over a seven year course, you catch the hardships Hester must endure and Chillingworths torture causes Dimmesdale to admit his wrongdoing.
When first tuition The Scarlet Letter,it seems to focus on the adultery committed amongst the two individuals and the aftermath that follows. After actually reading the story,an analytical reader can learn very much about the Puritans ways and society.
This story did a very good descent showing unseen kindness of puritans(at least in the story), which is unremarkably hidden by the usual view of Puritans(stubborn,strict, and unforgiving). The popular delineation of Puritans, strict enforcers , was revealed at the start of the book with the punishment of Hester Prynne, yet later on it displayed the insanely rare forgiving gradient that appeared years into the story.
One of the reasons the author wrote this story was to pose a question of what kind of wickedness is worse? A sin of passion committed by Hester and Dimmesdale, or the intentional unmercifulness displayed by the sneaky Chillingworth?
