Where is the book set and when? It is set in Richmond in 1919. Richmond is an inner city suburb, where the houses are very miniscule and single fronted (Victorian styled). The living conditions were very cramped and the suburb was in the main a poor suburb. Children would generally only have the alley to occupy themselves with, because they did not have big enough backyards.
