Dr. Martin Luther King is writing a letter to clergymen who ar against his consummations in Birmingham, Alabama.
At this time he was the President of the Confederate Christian Leadership Conference. He was pick outed to come to Birmingham to engage in a non-violent direct action program. He says he is in Birmingham because injustice is here. He feels that injustice anywhere is a little terror to it everywhere. Whatever affects one directly affect all indirectly. He explains that the nonviolent protests are due to the fact that the white personnel structure as left the Negro community with no alternative. He tells the clergy that yes, we should negotiate, but the sit-ins and marches are direct action that he feels is necessary. Our direct action program is hoping to create sufficient confusion and chaos so that it lead open the limen to negotiation. He says that justice, too long delayed is justice denied. He says that the Negro has become impatient tarrying for the time to ask for equality. Tired of non beingness able to access, restaurants, motels, amusement parks, and so on Tired of segregation. He says they only break unjust laws. In 1954, segregation was outlawed but still exists so they will break laws that allow segregation.
Segregation gives the segregator a misguided star of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority. He feels it isnt the Ku Klux Klan that is the stumbling block, it is the white moderator who agrees with the goals we seek but not he methods of direct action. They always advise the Negro to wait for a more convenient season. It is a electronegative peace as the Negro accepts passively his plight. We are not the cause of tension, we bring the tension to light away from being hidden under the surfaceâ€"like a drudge that festers when hidden but only begins to heal when it is exposed.
